This is a Travesty [May. 24th, 2009|09:14 pm]
Terminator Salvation: 34%
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/terminator_salvation/

Star Trek: 95%
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_trek_11/

I may write a later full-review of Terminator, but I will say that far and away, Terminator Salvation is the better movie of the two. Now I loved Star Trek (8/10), but I LOVED Terminator (9/10). Reviewers nitpicked the shit out of it but for Star Trek they downplayed their complaints.

For the first time, I am wondering if movie journalism is being affected the same way that videogame journalism is - backing by the major studios. Star Trek represents the attempted launch of a revitalized franchise with a mainstream appeal (a LOT is riding on its success), while Terminator has shifted studios.

For example, Star Trek is a campy, yet fun film. It's a nonsensical plot loaded with cliches and forced callbacks. Terminator's plot is logical and the callbacks are all integrated in such a way that they become a functional part of the film - amazing in and of itself. Likewise, Terminator gets slammed for its stylish approach to cinematography (it's one of the best-shot films since Kill Bill that I've seen) while Star Trek's take is nothing new or even visually interesting (it's a cliche).

Oh, Anton Yelchin is, for the record, the perfect Kyle Reese. No, seriously. Michael Biehn's Reese and his Reese, nuances AND VOICE match to a frightening degree.

Fuck the Star Trek sequel, I want another Terminator. And yes, holy fuck yes, it's better than Rise of the Machines.

Punch Out!! [May. 23rd, 2009|11:53 pm]
The new Wii Punch Out!! truly is amazing. There's some major flaws that come with it the prevent it from being anything over a 9/10 at this point:

1. There's some minor input lag, like in Killzone 2, but never to that extent. It's noticeable when you throw punches or block.
2. The class controller scheme's D-Pad is way too small - you'll slip off and end up dodging in the wrong direction or throwing an unintentional block.
3. The insta-KO system. Sometimes you get knocked out and don't have the option to get back up (NOT TKO).
4. Your Star Punches can now be dodged and interrupted - enemy attacks take priority over them (lame).

I chucked all my excess unused clothes, fixed my computer chair's handle, and cleaned the interior of my [new] car. In two days I managed to accomplish what I originally intended to take the entirety of May.

What Riot Did Tonight [May. 17th, 2009|12:42 am]
Not only did I build a bookcase, I spent 9 hours cleaning my bedroom (I have no plans to clean out my closet, which is a wreck and would take at least another 9 hours to even crack the damn surface of it). I can't believe how much dust had piled up. @_@

Killzone 2 Controls [Feb. 27th, 2009|11:09 pm]
I picked up Killzone 2 and am playing through the campaign, so I'll post a review of it in the next few days, but I'd like to address one problem - a major one - that's already popped up.

Bar none, Killzone 2 has the worst controls I have ever encountered in any FPS game that I have played to date (KZ1 being the only debatable exception). The deadzone alone is a good two inches from center and there's a good 4-5 frame lag for any command you input. And you move like you're underwater. ARG.

Also notable is the cover system: it's bad, REALLY bad. Think of Rainbow Six: Vegas or Gears of War 2, but removing the free-form maneuverability. And it's very hard to even tell when you're in cover or not. And it's impossible to crouch-walk near cover because you auto-latch onto it whether you want to or not. BLARG.

Thoughts on RE5 [Jan. 26th, 2009|05:44 pm]
So the demo finally hit XBL and I'll do a quick breakdown of my impressions. Keep in mind that RE4 is one of my favorite games.

Because there are now two players, the number of infected assaulting you has just about doubled (or spawn infinitely when they don't) and your bullet damage has been halved. Unfortunately, this is crippling to the core mechanics behind the title (or at least RE4) and because of this, co-op both saves and breaks the game.

Consider: you must now empty 10 rounds into an infected instead of 5. But because your rate of fire has not been altered from RE4's single player focus and there's no real stopping power to your weapons anymore, every enemy is able to get in close - regardless of how you're fighting them. You become swarmed, but have no mobile defenses against them now.

Crippling the game further - and this is probably the single thing that could actually alter the aforementioned statements - are the poor controls. You cannot move and fire at the same time, despite the game being designed to the contrary. Enemies swarm and get in close because you can't move position. Can't see the guy on your left? Gotta stop aiming, reposition yourself, then aim again. We don't need to be able to run and gun, but we DO need to be able to adjust our position while aiming. The game is designed with this in mind, yet for some reason the developers decided otherwise but didn't balance the enemy behavior to take this into account.

If you take this as an action title, it might rate a 5/10 (compare it to GoW2). As a survival horror, maybe a 7/10 (Dead Space is by far the better game). RE5 is in the midst of an identity crisis. If they want it to be an action game - which co-op and horde-style mobs suggest - it needs to have action controls. What's the point of strafing if you can't strafe during combat? Oh, wait, it's only there for western gamers to feel "comfy."

Demo rating: 7/10
(I see potential for a great game, even with the poor controls - but right now RE5 is just "solid" - not stellar like RE4)

(no subject) [Jan. 3rd, 2009|06:13 pm]
Playing Resistance 2 online is the equivalent of sitting down in a classroom and being taught a lesson about bad game design while being held at gunpoint by thirty psychotic gunmen.

Please, developers, I implore you to test your products before they hit the mass market and not to use a beta incorrectly as a marketing tool instead.

I must also implore gamers to pull their collective heads out of their asses. Metal Gear Online is a horrendously broken product as is R2. Neither require any sort of skill, unless you count wrestling with the control scheme and vying for the highest number of prayers recited during a match. Luck is the only skillset. Let me explain, in the case of Resistance 2:

- guns have varying fire rates. Your sniper fires every two seconds unless, for no reason, it decides to now fire every three. Even the carbine will magically decide to slow down.

- sometimes you will receive secondary ammo, but it never tells you when or how. Sometimes you will just spawn with it.

- many open areas are actually invisible walls; sometimes your bullets will go through, other times they will not.

- most guns fire from the bottom of the screen, although the trajectory smoke shows center. This is apparent when aiming over objects, inches over box as an example, and still somehow hitting them.

- now featuring the most useless map ever! The map tool a black box with white lines zoomed in to 500%. What you tend to see in the normal map view is in no way related to how the map is presented in its larger form. At no time will you ever be able to use your standard map for direction; doing so will actually lead to you being lost and confused.

- at the start of the match, let's spawn five players in the center of the map surrounded by fifteen enemies. Now let's keep spawning players like that, at all times next to the enemy but facing in the opposite direction.

So unless you get lucky, you will not get kills. If your gun decides to deal half damage or have its accuracy drop to half, that's not for you to decide.

Please note that I've left anything related to lag and my connection out of this equation. This is how the game plays, and yes, it makes Halo 3 look angelic and stable fun by comparison. Even CoD4's system would now seem to be perfect.

EDIT
I forgot to mention that R2's sniper speed is also variable, from instant distant travel to a low-velocity round. So leading is nullified if your shot is suddenly an instant one or if the travel speed is twice as slow as normal.

There's also a major issue with player health. Since exp is displayed per hit, you always know how much health an opponent has left. It's hilarious when 4 sniper rounds - that's 200 damage out of 100 health fails to kill. Or you murder someone with pin-point accuracy from a whole clip, every shot landing, and barely affect them - said player then takes a grenade, fire from another enemy, and one more grenade and still survives. This is not lag, but I can't tell yet if this is deliberate or unintentional glitching.

Resistance 2 Review [Jan. 1st, 2009|06:28 pm]
Having completed Campaign and sunk some time into multiplayer, I've decided to write a brief review.

Multiplayer: 5/10
- Imagine CoD4 with maps double the size somehow supporting 60 players. Now imagine that the spawn system spawns everyone into clusters where the action is. Clusterfuck of doom. So a map may be big, but expect to use only 20% of it and expect to spawn next to the enemy most of the time.

- The hit detection is seriously wonky. Fire an inch behind a running enemy and land a headshot. Lead and miss. Sometimes there's massive auto-aim, other times there's none whatsoever. With the same weapon, fire a clip to get a single kill, fire half a clip and get a kill. Spawn with secondary ammo, suddenly respawn without it. Accuracy that drops to near-zero and suddenly becomes pin-point for no reason. Joyyyyyy.

Campaign: 7/10
- Unpolished. This was rushed by Sony three months before production would have normally wrapped up. Expect some framerate drops and a significant number of low-res textures. Beyond a certain distance, boxes are used for buildings rather than defined and developed shapes.

- Lackluster. Sure, it's fun, but basic. For every great moment or mega courtyard battle, there's 2 or 3 segments of utter garbage. It's linear and tries to mimic Halo with certain presentational aspects, but presents a non-functional combination of CoD4 meets Half-Life 2. Does not exactly work.

- See previous entry on art design, or lack thereof, along with old-school game design. Also, no emotion in the story even though I think a few things were design to have some sort of emotional "impact." Yeah, no.

Summary:
Look, I had a shitload of fun with this game and I plan on leveling my profile so I can play dress-up with my Chimera character. Also, the wiggling and writhing cocoons were great. But this game is simplicity itself; it's not hardcore FPS, but casual FPS trying to be hardcore. There are times when I felt I could lower the score to a 6/10, and times where I felt it could hit a high 9. But that's the problem: a sequel of this caliber from this developer should not be so imbalanced and so unpolished. I would say this sort of FPS was outdated when Gears of War 1 hit, or perfected by CoD4. And now that Gears of War 2 has hit, you can really see the impact it's made on my perception of the genre here. R2 doesn't cut it when held up against GoW2, CoD4 and 5 (I was expecting it to be MUCH better than 5, but sadly nope), and even Halo 3 (which somehow has super-better graphics) back when it released.

Also, I would direct everyone to IGN as now there is no doubt they were paid off by Sony. I had my suspicions, but after playing the game, yeah, barely anything in their review holds much truth.

Resistance 2 - Thus Far [Dec. 29th, 2008|02:01 pm]
I was actually shocked at the stable connection I had when playing R2 online a few days ago compared to my current less than stellar XBL experiences - mostly because my connection goes through two routers. For the most part, R2 ran buttery-smooth, although I get a feeling that the online playability is due more to aim-assist than actual connection stability - the headshot hitbox with a sniper is a good inch wide, for example.

And PS3ers suck balls. I'm a freaking shooter n00b and I went 3:1 while fumbling with the controller (fingers slipping, wrong button presses etc.), not knowing the map or spawn points, and generally not knowing what the fuck each weapon does along with the secondary fire.

Campaign-wise, I'm iffy on the experience of R2 as a whole. It doesn't have the design polish of a AAA game such as CoD4 and the art design is all over the place - from realistic to cartoonish. One second it looks like CoD4, the next Halo 3, the next L4D . . . etc. Many textures were left as placeholders in low-res form, but I'm not implying that the game was rushed out the door - I think those stem from design choices (gameplay over graphics, story, etc.). I do wish the sound effects weren't lacking on the weapons (I want crispy "oomph") and that the level design wasn't so linear and basic compared to the FPS offerings on the PC and 360. I prefer it when enemies aren't just chucked at me or thrown down in the level haphazardly, but are thoughtfully placed in key locations to create a visceral battle experience.

I'd give a preliminary rating of 7/10 thus far, pushing to an 8/10 depending on whether the experience "comes together." R2 feels old-school in its approach (I'm reminded of Marathon), which means no real frills and thrills, but really, really fun, playable, and enjoyable thus far.

CHRISTMAS OMG [Dec. 25th, 2008|10:18 am]
Merry Christmas to everyone I know, and to anyone swinging by mah journal!

Everything's fantastic this year so far, especially with my brother and sister-in-law who've adopted the newest addition to our family. They're spending Christmas alone in a hotel with the baby in the midwest until the court date for the adoption arrives, when they can legally cement the adoption, so my heart goes out to 'em this year.

The Ice Storm of 2008 [Dec. 13th, 2008|10:02 pm]
This major (and unexpected storm) is being compared to the Blizzard of '87 in my area. Freezing rain from 10pm Thursday to 8am Friday. We had a flooded room in the basement and a flooded storage room at our liquor store (no damage to our stock since we got there in time ^_^). Cable died around Midnight Thursday and just popped back on about 30 minutes ago. And the power went down around 3am Friday morning and came back up today around 1pm. I'd say only 50% of our county's got power and cable right now. There's some places where one side of the street has it while the other doesn't.

And some estimates indicate full restoration coming by or on Tuesday :/

Pics for joo all behind the cut. )

Epic Games is Epic Fail [Nov. 20th, 2008|11:19 am]
The shotgun is indeed glitched in GoW2 to only work when on host team or in proximity to the host if on the opposing team. Otherwise it fires into the ground when blind-firing:

Dear Treyarch: [Nov. 16th, 2008|10:50 pm]
Veteran difficulty does not mean spamming 5+ grenades at you with 100% accuracy or allowing enemies to shoot through landscape or have 100% accuracy even if it means the bullets must come out of the hilt of the gun when an enemy is facing away from you.

I stomached [and loved] Mile High Club on Veteran difficulty. That took balls and brains. Hell, CoD4 on Vet was simply amazing because IW understood what genuine difficulty vs. artificial difficulty means.

In my opinion, WaW proves that Treyarch is comprised of lazy, talentless hacks. Fun and enjoyable, but it lacks the polish, care, and love that IW infuses into the franchise.

That said, WaW is the first CoD that (though I consider both 3 and this to be sub-par spin-offs and not "official" CoD games) I might switch to Hardened due to artificial difficulty stemming from terrible game design.

My Current Game Ratings:
Gears of War 2: 9/10 (finished)
Dead Space: 8/10 (unfinished)
Fable 2: 7/10 (unfinished)
Fallout 3: 9/10 (unfinished)
Farcry 2: 7/10 (unfinished)
World at War: 6/10 (unfinished)

I'm pretty sure that in reskinning Modern Warfare, Treyarch copied and pasted their AI resources from CoD3 on top of it.

On that note, Treyarch did a much better job than the train wreck that was CoD3, but Activision should NOT allow them to touch the franchise ever again. Treyarch doesn't have an ounce of creativity in their bones and it shows.

Riot is PISSED [Nov. 13th, 2008|11:26 am]

Ref links:
http://kotaku.com/5081159/lbp-levels-getting-moderated-out-of-existence
http://kotaku.com/5085360/sony-speaks-out-on-littlebigplanet-moderation

So Sony is removing any content that parodies or is a homage to anything not owned specifically by Sony in LittleBigPlanet, thus proving that they are fascist pigs. Good job destroying one of the only good games on the system after telling users they could create anything they wanted to.

Sony also sells Sackboys wearing stuff from other IPs and then deletes levels that are designed for them. And by deletion, it means the level can no longer be played, copied, or modified by the original creator even if it's on his system offline. There are no warnings. Imagine spending 14 hours to create a level, upload it, then have it deleted a day later. You'll never get it back.

But what pisses me off - because I already know Sony is scum (yes, far worse than the shit M$ pulls) when they only sell you operating licenses for their systems (PSP and PS3 can't be owned by the consumer) - is that the Playstation fanboys and many "LBPers" are defending Sony's move claiming that "they're covering their asses legally" (ignoring that Sony is already protected under Fair Use and Parody laws) and that gamers should "be more creative" instead. Homages and parodies are creative. So is designing an original level.

If this is how the youth generation thinks, we're fucked.

Way to take it up the ass by The Man and give up the rights our forefathers and World War I and II vets fought so desperately for.

Rant: what's the point of a map editor when the multiplayer portion of your game is broken and an unplayable mess? FarCry 2, I'm looking at you. There's a problem when you can't headshot people, even if you shot 'em in the head. Or when it takes more than a clip to kill someone. Or when the sniper rifle holds only one bullet before reload and it takes 2-3 shots to kill someone with it.

One a side-note, I'm enjoying the single-player portion, even if there's no heart or soul to it. It's solid, but there's no oomph or anything special. Luckily, I only picked up the game since you can drive around all sorts of locations and are able to pick whatever approach you want to the combat scenarios you face. That's all I wanted and it delivers.

Disturbing Gaming Trends [Oct. 26th, 2008|09:41 pm]
Has anyone else notice a trend developing for console games? Many games are being released with months still left in development. Ninja Gaiden 2 is the worst offender, having never been playtested and with placeholder textures not yet filled in (an estimated 9-12 months of development were skipped) and Fable 2 is perhaps the buggiest game I've played since KOTOR (I've had to reload a save 4 times in 20 minutes because things glitch and break - Fable 2 is definitely 3 months early than it was intended to be).

Now dead Space . . . they gave that extra months of dev time. And holy fook is it noticeable.

So does anyone else have similar experiences?
